Glaucoma and Nutrition: Why What You Eat Matters

Glaucoma is an eye condition that damages your optic nerve and is diagnosed through an eye screening or eye exam. Damage done by glaucoma cannot be repaired. There are many different types of glaucoma, some present symptoms, but some have no warning signs. If you are in the Leesburg FL, Eustis FL, or Clermont FL, area and need an eye doctor, visit us at Fishman and Sheridan Eye Care Specialists for an eye exam. Although there is no cure for glaucoma, nutrition plays an essential part in treating glaucoma.

Foods to Eat

You have probably heard the adage that you should eat carrots for good eyesight. Carrots contain an antioxidant (Vitamin A), but an ophthalmologist might suggest foods that offer better antioxidants if you have glaucoma. Studies have shown that eating foods high in vitamins C, E, A, and zinc may help slow glaucoma.

What types of foods contain these antioxidants? Vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli contain vitamin C. If you want to get Vitamin C from a fruit, try berries, citrus fruits, or cantaloupe. Vitamin E is found in egg yolk, seafood, avocados, butter, meat, wheat, and other grains, green leafy vegetables, and nuts. You can also get Vitamin A from egg yolks, but also grapefruit, papayas, cheddar cheese, liver, whole milk, and sweet potatoes are also excellent sources of Vitamin A. Zinc can be found in many of the foods already mentioned: liver, seafood, eggs, peanuts, whole cereals, and cheese.

Your ophthalmologist might suggest supplements be taken to ensure you get enough of the antioxidants you need. But, eating a healthy, balanced diet will help your eyes and many other aspects of your health.
