What are Cataracts?

Cataracts occur when there is clouding in the lens of the eyes. The lens focuses light and images on the retina. Obstructed lenses are unable to pass light and images become distorted.

What are the Risk Factors for Cataracts?

Any person can develop cataracts. However, it is more common for people over 65. Specific medication side effects can also cause a person to develop cataracts. Other possible contributing factors to cataracts include overexposure to ultraviolet light, smoking, and pre-existing conditions like diabetes.

What are the Symptoms of Cataracts?

The symptoms of cataracts can increase in intensity as the condition progresses. Common symptoms of cataracts include:

  • Distorted and blurry vision
  • Light sensitivity
  • Depth perception issues
  • Pupil color changes
  • The need to be closer when viewing distant objects

Any of these symptoms should be addressed by an ophthalmologist immediately. We will conduct a comprehensive eye exam to determine if cataracts are the source of your symptoms.

How Are Cataracts Removed?

Cataract surgery is a routine outpatient procedure. It is painless and does not require the need for stitches or injections. The cloudy lens is broken up and removed, then a new lens is implanted. Only topical anesthesia is used and many patients can resume regular activities as early as the following day.

When Do I Need to Get Cataract Surgery?

It is always better to get cataract surgery sooner than later. As soon as cataracts begin to interrupt your daily activities, you should make an appointment with our team as soon as possible.

Does Surgery Last a Lifetime?

New cataracts cannot form once a new lens is implanted. If you experience cloudy vision, you can speak with our team about other treatment options.
